November Trials and 2k Testing Summary

DUBC had an awesome showing at GB trials this year, with 12 athletes going down to Boston and 8 PBs on the 2k on the Saturday. Particular credit to our Women's Captain Tash who was the 4th fastest U23 and pound-for-pound likely one of the fastest.

On the Sunday, fresher Evelyna and finalist Tash finished as the 2nd fastest fully U23 pair and fresher Izzy Sellers cruised down the 5km course as the 5th fastest U21 sculler. They also placed well in comparison to other university crews, coming 3rd and 4th respectively among those.

Gus John and Calum Betteley were the 2nd fastest U21 Pair and Matty Cleugh, Ed Gaskarth and Jude Richards were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fastest lightweight U21s respectively. Andrew Mettrick was the 12th fastest U23 sculler and James Watson-Gandy came 5th for U21 scullers. Finally George Reed and James Crawley came 11th and 12th fastest for U21s.

Also great to see our alumni doing so well, with Lauren Irwin coming 2nd overall in the pair after a PB on Saturday and Megan Halpin the 11th fastest pair. For the men, George Bourne matched his PB on Saturday and was the 3rd fastest heavyweight sculler on Sunday. In the M2- Ryan Todhunter and James Vogel continued their great form in the 2- with a 4th place finish.

We are proud of all DUBC rowers, past and present, for their performances this weekend.

To add to the great performances at trials, our 2k tests at the beginning of November provided a whole host of new personal bests. In total, 11 out of the 14 women who tested got new PBs, as did 11 of the 28 men. Following this, our 30 minute test on Tuesday the 23rd was one of my favourite tests ever, which I admit is an odd sentence. We had 26 PBs out of the 38 people who tested, which is the most I’ve seen in a single session since being here. We’re in a great place at this stage in the season and the programme under new Head Coach, Rob Dauncey, is going very well. If you haven’t yet seen it, there’s a video on our Facebook and Instagram pages of the 2k.
