Exec 2023/24

William House
President

Will is a 4th Year MSc Management (Finance) student who learned to row in DUBC’s own development squad. Here, he took the win in Beg 8+ at his first BUCS Head but his rowing career really took off when he entered the senior squad. Despite falling seriously ill with sepsis last year, he became a pivotal member of the first ever third VIII to qualify for Henley Royal Regatta. Testament to his character and commitment to the boat club, Will has quickly become a respected and key member of the squad.

He will be striving to expand the depth and success of the boat club off the back of a dominant season - looking to defend BUCS VL titles and aiming to further grow the network of alumni and supporters as the 150th anniversary of DUBC approaches in 2027.

Ella Thomson
Vice President

Ella is a fourth year Chemistry student who learnt to row at Fulham Reach BC. As one of the most senior members in the squad, she balances the training load with an incredibly full-on degree and yet remains organised and dedicated. As such she has earned immense respect from the rest of the squad and has stepped-up to the Vice-Presidency role to lend the President her much needed experience. Ella also performs at the highest level as well. Whilst injury curtailed her previous season and meant she missed out on HRR, a Bronze in championship eights and a Gold in the lightweight coxless four at BUCS regatta in 2023 demonstrates that she also brings a competitive edge to the role. She will assist Will in organising events and running the club, whilst acting as a role model for the younger athletes in the squad.

Dominic Newton
Treasurer

Dominic is entering his final year in the boatclub. Having learned to row at Tideway Scullers School in London, Dom continued his rowing at Latymer Upper School and joined Durham in 2021. He has been a high achieving athlete with a plethora of BUCS medals won throughout his first two years here at Durham.

As treasurer, Dom will assist the boatclub by managing the accounts as well as attempting to mitigate any financial obstacles that the boatclub may run into. Dom studies maths and is very financially literate, so is well placed to manage the boat club’s financial matters throughout the year.

Caroline rijkse
Secretary

Graduating from Latymer Upper School in 2021, Caroline joined DUBC and made the 1st VIII in her first year, earning a coveted Full Palatinate AIO. In the 2022/23 season, she took on the role of club secretary, a burden which she carried out on her own. Nevertheless, throughout the year she organised race entries and accommodation for nearly 5 eights across DUBC. She is joined by Caspar as one of the secretaries for the 2023/4 season. When she isn’t organising race entries, or training with the squad, Carrie studies English.

Caspar Gray
Secretary

Caspar joined DUBC in 2022 as a seasoned Winchester cox, with several Henley appearances already under his belt, his first as early as 2018. He coxed the men’s 2nd VIII all year, steering the crew to a silver at BUCS Head and leading the boat to a win in the Academic 8+ category at the Metropolitan Regatta. In his free time, Caspar is a keen sailor, and he volunteers with administrative work at his local club. His time management and organisational skills make him perfectly suited to join Caroline as one of the Club’s secretaries.

Daisy quickly became a central character in the women’s squad, bringing energy and determination to every session, leading to her well-deserved selection for the Women’s 1V in the summer of 2023 after impressive seat racing results. Together with these girls, Daisy made the Saturday of Henley Royal in tremendous fashion.

Daisy has big ambitions for the year ahead and is eager and excited to build on last season’s results with Vice-Captain Izzy, leading a strong, unstoppable women’s squad to success and making this year an enjoyable and memorable one for all of DUBC.

Committee 2023/24

Izzy Sellers
Women’s Vice Captain

Izzy is a third year Geography student. She is one of the top athletes at the club and is at the absolute heart of the women’s squad. This year Izzy had quite the season. She managed to win the Haslam Trophy at Henley Womens, before then making the Saturday at Henley Royal in the Women’s 8+. Izzy was then selected to represented GB in the LW2x at the U23 World Championships in Plovdiv.

Izzy brings pure positivity and motivation to every session without fail, and you can always count on her to uplift everyone else.

Off the water George contributes massively to the atmosphere of the squad and helps to drive the standard and the culture of the club forward. This year he will work closely with Men’s Captain Calum to help to continue the success the club has had in the last few years, as well as creating a positive atmosphere and culture within the squad.

Having taken on the roles of Vice President for 2022/23 his contribution to the club is exemplary and has pushed all squad members around him to the next level.
