Both Men’s and Women’s crews impressed at their respective Head of The River Races. Both 1st boats won a Pennant, and the 2nd VIII’s achieved some of their best results on record.
Durham’s 1st VIII had a strong performance. Starting 18th they managed to climb ten places over the 6 .8 km course from Mortlake to Putney to finish 8th, winning the Bernard Churcher Pennant. They beat fierce competition posed by the likes of Imperial College and Queen’s Belfast.
Durham’s 2nd VIII also climbed up the ranks. Starting 60th to finish 34th – Durham’s second best result in this boat on record.
Durham’s 3rd VIII and fresher eight finished 124th and 183rd respectively.
The women had impressive performances likewise.
Despite the wet conditions, the 1st VIII started 13th and managed to increase their position to finish 11th, winning the Intermediate pennant.
The 2nd VIII finished 31st, the fastest university 2nd VIII and one of Durham’s highest ever placed 2nd VIII boats.
Their 3rd VIII finished 75th; and the fresher boat came in at 148th, the second fastest novice boat of the day.
