The weekend of the 27th & 28th November provided a good chance to see how our crews are shaping up.
At Rutherford head, in the 1st division, it was the turn of our Men’s 8s and our Women’s 4-s. The 1st 8 were disappointed with their row and came in second behind Newcastle’s non-student 8 and ahead of UL’s top crew. The 2nd 8 faired well against their Newcastle counterparts but were beaten by UL’s 2nd crew. Jenni Stephenson’s IM2 4- won their category and were the fastest four of the day.
Division 2 saw pretty horrendous blizzard conditions. In fact, standing on Newburn bridge – the snow was so bad you could hardly make out Newcastle steps. Our women’s 8+ won Elite 8+s in style whilst perhaps the performance of the day came from a scratch crew – our IM2 men’s quad of James Dodd, Stu McCluskey, Mike Walker and Stu West, which was put together on the day. They finished second overall, only 2 seconds behind UL’s winning Elite 4x-.
The following day, Durham’s and Newcastle’s top 2 men’s 8s and UL’s top 3 men’s 8s took to the icy waters of the Tyne. After the launches had broken up the sheets of ice, the crews competed in this private match race of 1500m side by side racing on Newburn Straight. Durham’s 1st 8 put amends to their performance the day before and came out victorious winning a magnificent trophy supplied by UL. Durham look forward to their away match against UL at the end of January.
