Former DUBC member Sophie Hosking won the women’s lightweight double sculls with fellow crew member, Katherine Copeland to claim Britain’s fourth rowing gold medal of the London Olympics.
Despite only forming the boat together earlier in the year, Hosking and Copeland were the fastest qualifiers for the final.
After finishing outside the medals in Lucerne and Munich, and receiving a bronze in Belgrade, the duo peaked at the right moment, beating their rivals China in the Olympic final by 2 seconds.
Sophie joined Durham University in the autumn of 2004 and graduated in Chemistry and Physics in the summer of 2007.
After the race, elated Hosking said: “It’s something we’ve been working on for so long.
“I just can’t believe it actually happened.”
