Last weekend saw the annual BUCS regatta at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, where almost 1000 crews from 64 Universites took to the water competing for individual glory and Victor Ludorum points to win the regatta Championship. As with previous years, the boat club was in attendance setting up camp atop the hill, providing a perfect location to intimidate other University clubs and work on a tan, supported by significantly better weather than in previous years.
Fielding a women’s squad, fresh from a huge victory at WoHoRR, the Saturday saw the final of the WInt2- being dominated by DUBC with all 3 medals going to the palatinate side. The women followed this up with both gold and silver in the WInt4x and a further silver medal in the WC4x. A particular highlight for the men’s squad was the 1st VIII pushing Newcastle out of the medals by a margin of almost 9 seconds and sending a warning message for the boat race just around the corner. The Sunday saw more top-notch racing with silver in WCLwt2-, WInt8c and bronze in WInt1x and MInt2x. However, the real glory went to the women’s 1st VIII who took home the gold in the champ event. The Monday saw the weather turning nasty and DUBC turning the screw with silver in WInt Lwt1x, MInt2-, MC2-, WC4-, WC2x – and bronze in MCLwt2x, WInt2x, MC4x. Again Durham took home gold on the Monday with the WInt2x.
Although submitting fewer entries than previous years and against stiff opposition, Durham retained the all-important Victor Ludorum with 1011 points above Imperial with 826 and Newcastle with 632. This year’s victory means DUBC is unbeaten in 7 years!
The event could not have been such a huge sucess were it not for the support of all the athletes and a huge thankyou to must go to Barbara, Chris and the whole food team who kept the club supplied with all things tasty.
