dubc development squad

Durham is proud to run one of the country's top university novice programmes, consistently producing winning crews at both BUCS Head and BUCS Regatta.

Development athletes trial and are selected in the early weeks of Michaelmas Term every year. From here, the Development Squad train together making full use of all the facilities DUBC have to offer as they begin to integrate into the Senior Squads, with the opportunity for some members to attend the DUBC Training Camp over the Christmas Holidays. To date, the Development Squad hold a huge number of BUCS medals, proving our strengths in developing excellent rowers out of individuals who had previously never rowed.

Beyond their novice year, development athletes are able to fully join the senior squad, where they compete amongst other top level university athletes. We are proud of our home grown international athletes such as recent graduate Ed Gleadowe, who won gold at the World Universities Championships (FISU), and Steve Rowbotham who won bronze at the Beijing Olympics.

The Development Squad is a fantastic opportunity to not only develop yourself as an athlete, but also as a person; be that through organisational skills, learning how to be a team player when it counts, or simply finding some of the strongest friendships you’ll have at university.
— Theo Thomas, 2019/20 Development Squad
The greatest challenges do however offer the greatest rewards, and I can only invite you to take on this challenge and tell you to trust me that it will be more than worth it.
— Chris Rimmer, 2015/16 Development Squad
