Success at Boston for Durham GB trialists.

December 19th, 2011

Six Durham athletes attended the GB second assessment in Boston, Lincolnshire, this weekend where they had to undergo a gruelling 5km scull.

At this stage in the season, such a trial is more a test of fitness and endurance, rather than the speed and strength needed in the 2km trails later in the season.

In the open weight men’s category, Barney Stentiford really impressed, coming 5th out of the U23’s and 19th overall. Callum McBrierty did well too, coming 21st in the U23′s (38th overall) just in front of John Ford who finished 39th.

Lightweight Will Fletcher made an impact coming 9th, in front of Fresher, Tim Woodman, who came 43rd, but was the 9th fastest U20.

Also coming 9th, though this time out of the U23′s, was Isobel Currie in the women’s single. A performance she was ‘really happy’ with.

Durham alumnus Philip Congdon, who left last year, entered a coxless pair with fellow Molesey team-mate, Richie Steele and came a very respectable 7th.

DUBC host NEIRC

December 17th, 2011

Durham University Boat Club hosted another successful year of the North East Indoor Rowing Championships on Wednesday at the Graham Sports Centre, Maiden Castle.

The event drew over 200 athletes from throughout the region, with the Universities of Teesside and Newcastle attending, as well as many Durham Colleges.
Contestants raced over 2km on Concept 2 ergos.

Impressive performances were noted from Durham’s Jess Budget, who won the open weight women’s category with a time of 7:07.1.

In the Heavyweight Men’s division Callum McBrierty was “pleased” with his personal best of 6:01.7, coming second behind Newcastle’s Sam Arnot with 6:00.5. George Seeger, a member of DUBC’s fresher’s squad,  won the beginners event with 6:26.6.

DUBC president Franz Imfeld was “really happy with all the support that turned up”.

Durham’s Tim Woodman won the lightweight men’s event with  6.27.6. Tim hopes to take this success into GB’s next set of trials on the 17th of December in Boston.

The college events were won by Lee Fisher of Grey and Harriet Horton of Collingwood.
