This year’s races saw a fantastic turnout from the alumni squad, with three eights in total braving the arctic conditions that had swept the nation. Two wily men’s crews organised by the indefatigable Mike Roberts had a tough race between them and gave the youngsters a run for their money off the start. The crews were as follows: Peter McManners, Simon Pelly, David Jones, David Lapish, Mike Roberts, James Stewart, Rupert Hessian, Dave Rendle, Geoff Potts, Jamie Priestley, Andy Purvis, Andy Riley, Jonathan Ferris, Garth Emrich, Andy Seddon, Huw Jones, Tom Bishop.
The Alumni women proved too much to handle for the squad girls who were defeated twice in close races. Many thanks to Jessica Chichester for organising the relatively younger women’s alumni team.
What was most evident from the event was that the indomitable Durham spirit remains strong many years after graduation and that one’s time in DUBC is special and lingering for all who have been involved. The next crucial date in the Alumni calendar is at Henley where there will no doubt be an even better turn out and atmosphere! Many thanks to the organisers and those who came down to support.

On a frosty and sunny morning, the Rutherford Head presented the club’s first challenge as a full squad. Three senior men’s eights and two senior women’s eights were boated, as well as a veritable flotilla of smaller boat classes. For many of the athletes in the squad this was their first chance to fully open the taps in an early Winter season marred by weather difficulties.
The women’s squad once again confirmed their strength and depth by winning four events in a mixture of sweep and sculling classes. The elite eight beat their opposite numbers from Newcastle by a minute and ten seconds in a resounding show of class that healed many of the wounds inflicted in last year’s boat race loss. The Second eight were the fastest boat in the WIM2 category, and were only two seconds behind Newcastle’s first eight. Further wins were added to the tally by the women’s coxed four and coxless quad, both in the IM2 category.
The men’s squad showed a no less potent performance, the men’s elite eight defeated their opposition from Newcastle by a margin of thirty three seconds, thereby confirming the strength of the new intake of which five were in the eight. The second eight’s performance followed a similar format to the women’s, in so much as they were victors of the IM2 class and a mere five seconds from Newcastle’s top offering. The Fours and quads distinguished themselves with some good performances. The men’s elite quad won over Newcastle by a margin of six seconds. The men’s elite coxed four won their category with a strong performance. Other wins came from the IM2 coxed four and IM3 quad.
These performances reflect a very positive trend to the early season, with more test ahead at the North East Indoor championships (hosted by Durham,) as well as the second set of GB trials.

Directions by Road
From the A1 South follows the signs for Blaydon. There will be a right hand turn up a hill on the B6317 just before Ryton signposted Newburn. The club is on your left just before the bridge.
From the A1 North follow the signs for Newburn. Cross the bridge and turn right into our entrance directly opposite Newcastle University.
Saturday - Head race acting as a time trial: 2.5 Km course
Sunday - Regatta: 1000m four abreast racing
Entries will be accepted for Eights and Coxed fours at Championship, Intermediate and Beginner level.
Division 1 - Championship and Intermediate 4+, Beginner 8+
Division 2 - Championship and Intermediate 8+, Beginner 4+

The racing format will allow Eights to be easily ‘split up’ into coxed fours to allow for more racing over the weekend. I.e. Boat clubs can enter 8 athletes in an Eight and two coxed fours.
£12.00 per seat (coxes free) ((total for both days))
N.B. £4 discount per seat if entered in both 4+ and 8+ for both days (I.e. £10 per seat)
E.g. Athlete entered in 4+ and 8+ for both days - £20
Prizes will be awarded to the winning crew of each category on the Sunday, provided there are more than three entries.
The University or College that wins the overall competition (decided through a points system, which will be published at the time of the draw) will win the ‘DUBC Winter Challenge Cup.’ Bias for point allocation will be given to Championship events, followed by Intermediate events, followed by Beginner events. Points awarded on Saturday for the head race will be weighted to half that of the points awarded on Sunday.
BUCS points will not be awarded.
Participants needn’t be members of British Rowing.
If necessary, accommodation should be organised by competing boat clubs.
We would recommend: Durham Travelodge or Washington A1(M) Travelodge
DUBC will host a Ceilidh in Durham on the Saturday evening. More details will be announced nearer the time.
This will be issued with the draw.
DUBC dominate:
BUCS Report
The squad got off to an excellent start to the new season at the first competition of the year, which saw Durham out in front with ten medals. This performance earned the University sixty-six BUCS points; this leaves the university as a whole at the top of the BUCS table.
Preparation had been characteristically tough with a grueling pre-season camp, the new intake were exceptionally talented and proved to put the cat amongst the pigeons. The top performance of the weekend has to be the heavyweight mens pair (Matt Rossitter, Stu McCluskey) taking gold in the face of strong opposition from Cambridge and Oxford Brookes. The womens doubles also had a strong result both picking up silver and bronze medals. The mens lightweight pair, featuring mens captain Peter Hudson and Boatman Stewart West showed good early season form, and picked up a silver medal. Perennial performer Emily Taylor took Gold in the women’s championship single by a margin of twenty-nine seconds.
The focus of the squad now moves out of the small boats into the fours and quads for the fours head in two weeks time.
