Dear Parents and Alumni

Apologies for the hiatus, there is plenty of news to report and sometimes too little time to get it all written down!

Over the Christmas break our athletes had plenty of time off for some well-earned recovery after a very committed first term that really showed in our final test week where over 90% of the club obtained a PB in one or more tests.

We regrouped in January for a tideway camp with our kind hosts at London Rowing Club. Special thanks should also be made at this point to all the very generous families who hosted hungry rowers for a week. Without their support we simply could not have organized such a productive week of training; considering that we logged similar hours on the water to three weeks of training during the previous term we really value the support of everyone involved.

Our time in London finished with the Alumni games where we invited past alumni to come and mix in with the current athletes for some friendly races. With a good turnout we got three crews on the water for some very competitive races and had a very good afternoon in the bar with some hot food and cold beer afterwards.

Moving deeper into January it was time for the New Years Head an event hosted by ourselves and Tyne United. With 86 entries across two divisions we managed to get 456 people out enjoying the sport and the particularly calm conditions for head racing made for a fairly fast day in the times as well.

DUBC had another strong outing with wins for the Men’s and Women’s first 8’s and the men’s 4X in division two. Extra credit goes to Katy Denham for racing the doubles division by herself in a single but coming third anyway! The development squad also enjoyed their first race for DUBC with strong performances in the novice eights and novice fours. The whole club will now be looking forward to Rutherford head on the 30th and a chance to finally test ourselves against some other universities ahead of BUCS head on the Tyne in February.

Until next time,

Edward Gleadowe
